I merge with my pets primarily to use beast abilities and leave beast mode and summon my pet whenever they are down. The pet does more damage active than passively waiting for the beast abilities to come back up. Also, you can use the 4 second unblockable / stun break skill on entering beast mode by switching modes frequently.
Unlike pets in Guild Wars 1, which grow as they level up and can evolve into several 'variants' that have slightly differnt stats (but still the same overall looks), GW2's pets always look the same. If you want a cooler pet, you have to find one that looks cooler to you.
The suggestions are mostly for group content, use whatever you want in open world. For soulbeast power specs you'll want rock gazelle, smokescale (PvP) or red moa. For soulbeast condi builds you'll want warthog, bristleback or lynx. For specs using the pet as an actual pet you'll want lynx, electric wyvern, iboga or jacaranda. Lukezors.

Gonna take a slightly broader answer and say pet evolution. Dire, Aggressive, Playful etc depending on how we interact with them. The GW2 Ranger pet has been a massive disappointment since day 1. God being able to interact with our pets would be so dope.
